2018’s Best Cities for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Believe it or not, the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade didn’t take place in Ireland. Its roots are actually in the U.S., though some say Boston while others claim New York. Regardless, what began as a Catholic feast day and gained more recognition with a parade in the 18th Century is today one of America’s biggest cultural holidays. More than 32 million people in the U.S. claim Irish ancestry – that’s over six and a half times the population of Ireland. As this lucky group of people expanded over the centuries, so too did American St. Paddy’s Day traditions. Chicago, for instance, gained fame for dyeing its river green, while other places are now known for their elaborate pageants, pub crawls or long processions of marching bagpipers. Last year, Americans were projected to spend $5.9 billion on the holiday.

But not every city that celebrates St. Patrick’s Day is worth kissing the Irish for. WalletHub compared 200 of the largest cities across 17 key metrics to find the best places to wear green and save some, too. Our data set ranges from Irish pubs and restaurants per capita to lowest price for a three-star hotel on St. Patrick’s Day to weather forecast. Read on for the list of winners, insight from a panel of experts and a full description of our methodology. For cool stats about the holiday, check out our St. Patrick’s Day infographic.

Why is St. Patrick's Day so popular in the United States?

It is estimated that as many as 35 million people in the U.S. claim some measure of Irish heritage. So, it stands to reason that the celebration on 17th March of Ireland's patron saint -- a fifth-century British missionary about whom we know precious little -- would be so popular outside of Ireland. St Patrick's Day celebrations in America, much like Irishness in America, often bears little resemblance to such celebrations in Ireland, which are nowadays characterized by an interesting blend of traditional religious observance and whimsical celebrations of Irishness and Ireland's long history. The conservative and rigidly-organized parades, like the famous one in New York, project an air of confidence (and perhaps even a militarism) that are absent in Ireland. The popularity of St Patrick's Day celebrations in the U.S. are also, I think, a reflection of Ireland's good standing internationally -- Ireland is small country and is considered by most to be a fairly non-controversial one on the world stage.

Are large St. Patrick’s Day celebrations an economic boon or economic drain for cities?

Unfortunately, St. Patrick's Day celebrations are often synonymous with heavy drinking and public order offenses. But while these garish examples of over-indulgence capture news-headlines, the celebrations are in most instances peaceful and cheerful affairs, which are surely an economic boon to those merchants and the cities that host them.

What are some social and economic considerations for cities looking to host St. Patrick’s Day celebrations?

It would seem that real difficulties arise in smaller cities and towns which are not possessed of sufficient numbers of police to manage an acute influx of revelers. The city of Hoboken in New Jersey is a prime example (it is an example which I can speak personally to, having briefly lived in Hoboken myself ten years ago). Hoboken boasts dozens of bars along with an unusually young population (20s and 30s); it is also only one mile square and is linked to Manhattan by tunnel and by ferry. Here, the police force is too small for the numbers of revelers who travel there to celebrate St Patrick's Day. The city has struggled over the years to cope and has employed several tactics to ensure law and order, including holding its parade weeks before the 17th of March and imposing a $2,000 fine for any violation of alcohol laws. But it is worth noting that the problems experienced by the civic authorities in Hoboken are not unique to St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Celebrations surrounding “SantaCon” have caused similar challenges.

In evaluating the best cities for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, what are the top five indicators?

As for the top cities in which to celebrate St Patrick's Day, it depends very much on what one is looking for. The massive New York City St. Patrick's Day parade is a sight to behold, and the NYPD have the resources to ensure that law and order are upheld throughout. Boston boasts an older (though somewhat smaller) parade -- 1724 (New York's first was in 1762) -- and is different from New York in that Boston has much greater numbers of Irish-born citizens and their descendants, who together lend the day a more authentic air. Still, nothing compares to St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Ireland. In cities like Dublin and Galway, there are colorful and unpretentious parades which serve as the centerpieces of unbridled festivity. Alcohol plays a part in these celebrations, to be sure, but it rarely, if ever, rises to the debauched, mean-spirited examples sometimes witnessed in America.

Why is St. Patrick's Day so popular in the United States?

Civic celebration of St. Patrick’s Day developed in the 1730s, in the form of small Colonial-style marches and festive banquets in honor of Ireland’s patron saint. Prominent Irish Protestants and a smattering of well-to-do Catholics belonging to fraternal clubs, such as the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in New York and the Charitable Irish Society in Boston, typically hosted these ceremonial occasions. In those years, the day provided an outlet for benevolent societies and local militia units to display their Irish heritage in parades, while speeches, toasts to Ireland and the United States, musical entertainments, and an occasional visiting guest from Ireland enlivened the sociable dinners.

From the early 1800s onward, particularly in mid-century famine years, the upsurge in Catholic Irish immigration greatly expanded church-centered observations of St. Patrick’s Day, with the result that the benevolent ethnic manifestations of the 1700s gradually transformed into Catholic and Irish nationalist-support showpieces. By the early 1900s, the day had come to reflect a set of cultural, political and economic implications for Irish assimilation in America and the evolving ethnic identity. The stirring parades, banners, bands and masses reflected Irish-American interests and heritage more than any other celebratory event or occasion, while etching the day on the national calendar as a widespread celebration of a prominent ethnic group.

The only day in the season of Lent when Catholics broke from traditional fasting and abstinence, St. Patrick’s Day took on an increasingly festive air as the twentieth century went on. Does the party atmosphere alone explain its enduring popularity? Its unique character offers a stronger reason for its endurance. Deeply rooted in religious faith, infused with ethnic symbolism, and charged with political meaning for much of its history, the day has served as a powerful expression of the Irish presence in America. It is the only occasion where Irish cultural heritage, support for an independent Ireland, successful assimilation, and pride in an ethnic group if not quite forty million strong, but certainly a major contributor to American history, has been publicly showcased. Today, despite the commercialization, cultural appropriation and excuse to let the (green) hair down, St. Patrick’s Day still resonates with meaning for Irish-Americans.

Why is St. Patrick's Day so popular in the United States?

One reason St. Patrick’s Day is popular in the United States is that there are many people of Irish heritage here. St. Patrick is the patron saint of the island of Ireland, and is recognized by Protestants and Catholics alike.

Since the 1700s, people from the island of Ireland have immigrated to the United States for freedom from religious persecution and for a better way of life (particularly following the Great Famine beginning in 1845).

Additionally, in response to a query on Google about how many Irish-born are in the United States, Irish Central used a 2013 United Nations estimate stating that there were 143,571 Irish-born in the U.S.

Similarly, online you will find references to a 2013 Census report which states that over 34 million Americans claim Irish heritage and ancestry.

Are large St. Patrick’s Day celebrations an economic boon or economic drain for cities?

Obviously, large cities, such as New York and Boston, with large populations of people with Irish heritage, will have successful St. Patrick’s Day parades. Additionally, in many places, such as New York, there are Irish cultural groups, as well as police and firemen, who perhaps would support the parade. Much may depend on the theme of the parade or a particular person being honored as a grand marshal.

I was the grand marshal of the Houston parade some years ago. Houston’s parade is run by a committee of volunteers from the city. The city itself does not sponsor the parade.

What are some social and economic considerations for cities looking to host St. Patrick’s Day celebrations?

Irish heritage and culture present within the city and a desire to preserve it through an annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.

How can local authorities promote safety and reduce alcohol related accidents on St. Patrick’s Day?

Hosting the parade before noon; police presence; and a clearly marked parade route.

Methodology

In order to determine the best places to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, WalletHub compared 200 of the most populated U.S. cities across four key dimensions: 1) St. Patrick’s Day Traditions, 2) Costs, 3) Safety & Accessibility and 4) St. Patrick’s Day Weather.

We evaluated those dimensions using 17 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the best conditions for celebrating the holiday. For metrics marked with an asterisk (*), the square root of the population was used to calculate the population size in order to avoid overcompensating for minor differences across cities.

We then determined each city’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its total score and used the resulting scores to rank-order our sample.
