< > Somnath Banerjee Assistant Professor of Marketing at North Dakota State University Somnath Banerjee What types of products are most likely to be discounted as part of a 4th of July Sale?
  • Seasonal products, e.g., summer and spring weather apparels, automobiles, firecrackers and outdoor products for 4th of July celebration. For example, new automobile models tend to start arriving from late summer and dealers are in a hurry to get rid of existing inventory at this time and in the process they may offer good deals. Similarly, patriotic merchandize and other products meant for 4th July may not sell so well after that day, so retailers may offer good discounts on them, particularly, closer to the 4th July day.
  • Capacity constrained service businesses that need to sell their last set of vacant seats just before the 4th July weekend, e.g., travel deals, airline deals.
  • Product categories that tend to experience more price discrimination and price competition, e.g., TVs, apparel at retailers like JCP, etc.
What tips do you have for finding the best 4th of July deals? I would suggest looking through deal websites like Groupon.com (experience goods, travel and coupons), offers.com (all types of products) and Deals2buy.com (consumer durables) to find good deals for 4th of July sales. For those who are really interested to ascertain the authenticity of the deals claimed by retailers, price tracking websites like Camelcamelcamel.com can be quite helpful too. The website provides prices for products over time and across various product models, which can help one determine whether the price is actually low compared to historical standards and during which time of the year the prices tend to be lower. For those interested in automobiles, websites like Truecar.com also provide the price trends over time and across customers, which may help verify the authenticity of the deals claimed by dealers. In addition, multi brand online retailers like pricegrabber.com help to do price comparison more easily and shop for better deals. Do you think retailers should remain open or close in observation of the 4th of July holiday? Does keeping stores open on a national holiday hurt employee morale? Following is how retailers, consumers and employees will likely be impacted if retailers plan to stay open on July 4th. Consumers will benefit from the added convenience of being able to purchase products during the 4th July, particularly for those who may have difficulty finding time to do shopping on working days. Of course, they have the choice of not purchasing too. So the additional sales that retailers are likely to see from such store opening will cause incremental benefit for customers. If retailers remain open during 4th July holiday, they are likely to see some additional sales and hence, profit. The fact that many retailers in the past have stayed open on Independence Day suggest that there is a profit opportunity. As far as employees are concerned, as long as retailers compensate them for their work on the holiday and provide them with choice to decide whether to work on holidays or not, they would not have issues. Choice of working on holidays may also be provided by building appropriate expectations while offering job contracts to employees so that they understand that working on holidays is part of the job. If such expectations are not built in advance and employees are asked to work on holidays, then that will probably decrease employee morale and cause turnover in near future. I think the key on 4th of July Independence Day is independence. As long as each of the three players, i.e., the consumers, retailers and employees, independently chose to get involved in trade on Independence Day, it is great for our economy and a celebration of freedom. What tips do you have for avoiding overspending during the 4th of July sales period? I think that clear prioritization of needs, searching for information and developing an appropriate budget can help customers avoid overspending during the sales period. Impulse purchase of small ticket size items based on deals may not hurt but for bigger ticket size items one may have to search for information carefully and make more well thought decisions to avoid regret. Mark Groza Enterprise Holdings Assistant Professor of Sales at Northern Illinois University Mark Groza What types of products are most likely to be discounted as part of a 4th of July Sale? The July 4th holiday occurs in the mid-summer when most places of the country are experiencing their hottest days, thus one product category that retailers tend to discount is window air conditioners. At this point in the summer, many who live without central air conditioning are frankly over sweating it out and retailers look to capture their physiological needs during 4th of July sales. Other product categories likely to be discounted as retailers hope to reduce their summer inventory include summer apparel, swimsuits, and sandals. Also, if a shopper has been looking to update their outdoor space, expect to find deals on outdoor patio furniture and grills. What tips do you have for finding the best 4th of July deals? Following company's social media accounts is an effective way of finding exclusive deals that aren't easily detectable in Google search results. Also, even though consumers are faced with the trade-off of providing their data to companies when signing up for an account or subscribing to emails, it really is a great way to gain information about current sales and access to exclusive deals. It really helps a consumer be able to price comparison shop. Do you think retailers should remain open or close in observation of the 4th of July holiday? Does keeping stores open on a national holiday hurt employee morale? This is a difficult question. Some employees may perhaps enjoy the extra hours or overtime compensation that accompanies working on a national holiday while others may value the time off with their family and friends. In certain industries, such as in the hospitality and food and beverage industries, employees may garner some of their highest tips on July 4th throughout the entire year. The brick-and-mortar retail industry is facing intense competition as their online competitors can market their promotions and be accessed by consumers, at all hours in a day. Remember, these online retailers also require employees to work during holidays such as the 4th of July to ensure orders are fulfilled in a timely manner. As retailers continue to integrate the online channel with the traditional brick-and-mortar, and as consumers continue to demand instant access to products it has become necessary for retailers to remain open throughout the year. Does working on national holiday’s hurt employee morale? It depends, of course. A big influence on employee morale is how management handles the situation. While paying overtime and other types of extra compensation (i.e., bonuses, compensatory time) does help soften the sting of working on holidays, the culture management creates within the organization is also very important. The positive culture created throughout the year makes working holidays a bit easier. Conversely, a negative culture created thought the year really amplifies any animosity toward working national holidays. Most importantly, employees must feel valued and appreciated especially when asked to work during undesirable times such as the 4th of July holiday. What tips do you have for avoiding overspending during the 4th of July sales period? 4th of July promotions are very effective at pulling at our heartstrings. The patriotic red-white-blue promotions are usually quite visually-appealing and evoke nostalgia in consumers. Also, consumers are typically in positive spirits during this summer holiday. Because of the combination of these factors, it is important for consumers to remain conscientious of overspending. One of the best ways to avoid overspending is to create a written budget and share that budget with other family members. Setting spending (or saving) goals is important throughout the year but especially during holiday times. The key part of creating an effective budget is to write it down and make it visible; perhaps place it on the refrigerator or near the computer. Countless studies show that we are much more likely to follow up on goals if we write them down and share with other people. Kimberly A. Whitler Assistant Professor of Business Administration at University of Virginia Kimberly A. Whitler What tips do you have for avoiding overspending during the 4th of July sales period? Have a plan. One easy way to prevent overspending is to have a list of items you need and to commit to shopping for the items on the list. Overspending can happen when we just show up at the mall or a store without a plan. Having a plan can direct the shopping trip and reduce to temptation to purchase unnecessary items. Spend time outdoors -- not indoors. Overspending often happens when consumers go out to browse and they end up finding something they hadn’t planned on purchasing and may not have even needed. For some, the act of spending hours in stores can be a hobby and a fun way to pass the time. However, what starts off as window shopping can turn into unneeded purchases (and potentially regret later). To prevent this from happening, spend the 4th outside with family and friends -- away from the temptation to purchase. Kelley O'Reilly Associate Professor of Marketing in the Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University Kelley O'Reilly What types of products are most likely to be discounted as part of a 4th of July Sale? Most common products to be discounted are in three categories: travel, outdoor and DIY. For instance in regard to travel, cars, automotive parts (tires), and travel services (hotels and packages) are common. Additionally, anything used for outdoor living are also very common products discounted at this time. For most, the timing is a bit "late" for buying a grill, outdoor games, etc. so pricing can be very attractive in this category. Lastly, anything in the home DIY segment is also an area where discounts (driven by manufacturers' promos) are common: think paint, fencing, decking materials, etc. What tips do you have for finding the best 4th of July deals? Favorite retailers promo displays, social media, word-of-mouth from friends and family. What tips do you have for avoiding overspending during the 4th of July sales period? Spend only on items that you originally intended to buy. This is common sense (but not altogether that common). Why spend just because something is discounted? Responsible spending helps avoid the tendency to "buy things you don't need, to impress people you don't like, with money you don't have." Guofang Huang Assistant Professor in the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University Guofang Huang What types of products are most likely to be discounted as part of a 4th of July Sale? Medium to low-end consumer products, such as fast-fashion clothing, certain models of consumer electronic products from the current and previous year. For example, do not expect latest models of Dr. Dre headphones to be on sales, but you may find some of its older models be on sale. To know whether certain products may be on sale, you just need to ask yourself if you have been waiting for a good deal to buy them and whether a 20-30% discount, for example, would nudge you into action. If answers to both questions are yes, you are likely to find those products on sale. What tips do you have for finding the best 4th of July deals? Check your mailbox before you go out shopping. Marketers are becoming so good at targeting that you may just get the discount coupons that you have been waiting for just before the holiday. Another tip is to check merchants’ official websites before going out to malls. Companies often give different deals for online and offline channels, and the online deals are normally better. Do you think retailers should remain open or close in observation of the 4th of July holiday? Does keeping stores open on a national holiday hurt employee morale? I think they should remain open if they are in the medium to lower end segments of their markets. I do not think it would hurt employee morale as long as they are well compensated. What tips do you have for avoiding overspending during the 4th of July sales period? It is helpful to think about whether you will be using a product so frequently that you cannot wait for a potentially better deal that could hit you soon. If you are saving up for your first home or Tesla 3, you should take action only if you find a deal really irresistible. Erika Matulich Professor of Marketing in the John Sykes College of Business at The University of Tampa Erika Matulich What types of products are most likely to be discounted as part of a 4th of July Sale? It is time for summer parties, so outdoor items are on the radar for sales. In clothing, look for swimsuits, shorts, and other summer wear. For the home, look at patio sets, lawn mowers, hot-weather plants, and grills. Related to the grills, you should see bargains on barbecue and grilling items such as hot dogs, burgers, buns, and condiments. Another way to think about sales is in the home improvement area, so appliances and paint are typical sale items. Finally, mattresses, electronics, and children’s toys historically have had big sales for Independence Day. What tips do you have for finding the best 4th of July deals? Compare sales flyers for big box and home improvement stores. Remember, they often match the lowest price you can find. You can also shop online and skip stores altogether because many retailers will offer free shipping or delivery, along with the sales prices. A quick search online can help you find the best deals (I use dealsplus.com and coupons.com). Do you think retailers should remain open or close in observation of the 4th of July holiday? Everyone should be able to celebrate holidays in their own way, and shopping at retailers may be a necessary part of the holiday. Similarly, any retailer should be able to choose whether they are open or closed on a holiday to reflect their company mission and vision. It is important, however, for a closed retailer to communicate with their customers beforehand. Personally, I am in favor of partial day openings so anyone needing to shop can do so, but retailers can also give time off to their employees. Retailers should have enough historical data to know when the busy and dead hours are, and can set holiday hours accordingly. Does keeping stores open on a national holiday hurt employee morale? Of course. Almost any employee would welcome time off to spend with friends or families, and drawing the “short straw” to stay at work can reduce morale. That is why partial day hours could be observed, so all employees have at least some time off for celebration or personal time. What tips do you have for avoiding overspending during the 4th of July sales period? Set a budget and stick to it. Extra impulse items can really add up, like those extra fireworks, toys, games, or decorations for a party. Think about purchasing a gift card in the amount of your budget and then don’t go beyond the value of the gift card. Or set aside a certain cash amount and only spend that cash. You can also decide on a limited shopping list of “must haves” and don’t go beyond that list even if another item on sale tempts you. Just because there is a good deal, doesn’t mean you need that item. Consider having partygoers pitching in and helping with décor, grill supplies, condiments, plastic cutlery, and so on -- like a potluck with a larger menu than food items. Everyone can then share, have fun, and not overspend. Ajay T. Abraham Assistant Professor of Marketing in the Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle University Ajay T. Abraham What tips do you have for avoiding overspending during the 4th of July sales period? Research suggests the use of a shopping list to reduce impulse buying, especially while purchasing more than 15-20 items. Aimee Huff Assistant Professor of Marketing at Oregon State University Aimee Huff What types of products are most likely to be discounted as part of a 4th of July Sale? Likely those products and categories most closely associated with consumers’ celebration plans. Picnics, barbecues, community celebrations, parades, etc. are popular ways that Americans celebrate Independence Day, so retailers will feature and discount products across a range of related categories such as grocery (staples like hotdogs, mustard, marshmallows), consumables (disposable plates, tin foil), housewares (patio ware, décor), clothing and soft goods, and bigger seasonal purchases like BBQs, patio furniture, camping goods, and luggage. This is also the kick-off to summer and a time when retailers will discount summer apparel, swimsuits, pool/beach toys, etc. Consumers are also looking for anything in red, white, and blue, so we’ll likely see retailers promote patriotic editions of standard consumer goods. The July 4th holiday is a little more like Super Bowl or the Christmas holiday in that the retailer promotions and consumer spending largely occur in preparation for the holiday -- as opposed to Thanksgiving, where promotions and spending have come to be part of the holiday itself. Do you think retailers should remain open or close in observation of the 4th of July holiday? Does keeping stores open on a national holiday hurt employee morale? When non-essential retail establishments open on a national holiday, this goes against the spirit of holiday and the country’s need to take a day off to celebrate a significant occasion. When REI decided not to open on Black Friday, the CEO said that retailers should not “invade” holidays by opening (on a holiday), and his company has encouraged employees and customers to get outside and make memories on the holiday. Public response to this decision has been very favorable, and I think more retailers could successfully extend this philosophy into Independence Day. In relation to July 4th, Americans have strong associations with parades, fireworks, family, and food, often involving travel and outdoor celebrations. Those are the activities that consumers, employees, and their families want to remember when they think of Independence Day. What tips do you have for avoiding overspending during the 4th of July sales period? Planning is key, especially given that a lot of consumer spending is on smaller dollar-item purchases whose collective price can really add up. In-store promotion in grocery stores, for example, will encourage in-store decision-making (i.e., impulse purchases), pushing consumers to purchase higher quantities and from more categories. Shoppers will be able to avoid overspending by planning -- determining what items to purchase, in what quantity, and what the overall budget for the shopping trip should be. The best way to do this is to physically write out a list. This is a little bit easier to do online, where the total cart value is updated as things are added to it -- whereas a trip to the grocery store for $40 spend on a few cookout groceries can quickly escalate to a $70 shop after the shopper is exposed to in-store promotions. Another factor that shoppers should consider is slack in their budget. That is, they should anticipate making in-store decisions as a result of retailer promotions, and should factor a buffer into their budgets.
