Earlier this year, I was sick for two weeks. Unfortunately, I’ve had asthma since I was a kid. So when a respiratory illness hits, I tend to cough and suffer longer than the average person. During COVID, my asthma flared up more often, likely due to the stress of having a baby during a pandemic. […]

If you want to lose weight and gain muscle, join a dad bod or a mom bod challenge. The social pressure to hit your goals will be immense. And if you put a financial penalty for not meeting your goals by a certain date, you will be even more motivated to get fitter. Since graduating […]

In October 2023, we upgraded to a larger finished home we didn't need. Three years later, I want to share whether it was worth it, so you can make a better decision if you're tempted to do the same. More than any other material item money can buy, a home is the most desirable. The […]

If you wait too long to start spending your money, you will have wasted many years of unnecessary work, stress, and worry. You'll have traded your best decades for a number on a screen that eventually gets passed to someone else. After another summer living with my parents, I'm even more convinced about 45, my […]

At almost 50, I’m never doing a gut remodel again. Everyone who has survived one has the same thousand-yard stare. At some point, you'll find yourself short on money with no obvious way to fix it. You'll have a plan. You'll have strategies. But you won't know exactly where the money will come from. That's where I am right now. So I tried something that might make some of you groan: I manifested money. You've […]

I have more than 40 financial accounts across four people to manage. More accounts means more questions. Can we spend more? Are we missing a tax opportunity? Does an investment still make sense given everything else we own? For years, answering them meant a spreadsheet, a free Saturday, and a lot of guessing. Then I […]

One of the reasons I accepted Portfolio Penguin's book deal in 2019 was to demonstrate to my kids the importance of work. Not working sets a bad example if you are a FIRE parent. If I spent two and a half years ideating, writing, editing, and marketing a book they could eventually find in a bookstore, […]

Part of the American dream is to climb the property ladder and live in the nicest neighborhood possible. We spend more than half our lives at home, so we want a neighborhood that offers as much peace, quiet, safety, and convenience as our budget allows. As an old man with young kids, long gone are the days […]
