21st Century Review Summary: 21st Century auto insurance is more standard than standout. Auto insurance shoppers who want lots of choices and discounts may want to look elsewhere. You may be forced to, anyway, as 21st Century only serves California and Hawaii residents. Farmers Insurance, which owns 21st Century, is available to serve residents outside of those two states.

For those who are eligible, 21st Century’s limited coverage options and discounts do not guarantee low costs, unfortunately. Some customers have complained of high premiums and unexplained price increases.

In the sections below, you can learn more about the policy options from 21st Century auto insurance and see how they compare to offers from other popular car insurance companies that operate nationwide.

  • National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC): In 2018, 21st Century auto insurance received a higher number of complaints than other similar sized companies in the auto insurance industry.

21st Century auto insurance proudly points out that their auto policies have saved customers an average of $300. Customer experiences cast doubt on that claim, however. Many people have complained about relatively high insurance premiums and significant price hikes after making a claim. Others have noted that their premiums increased without cause.

In terms of financial strength, 21st Century Insurance has received an “excellent” rating from A.M. Best, a leading credit rating agency for the insurance industry.

Fun Fact: 21st Century Insurance is owned by Farmers Insurance Group, allowing 21st Century to rely on Farmers’ highly rated claims servicing process. 21st Century is a five-time recipient of the Achievement in Customer Excellence Award presented by Confirmit, a market research company.

21st Century Insurance Coverage Options

21st Century Insurance sells car insurance only in California and Hawaii. Drivers outside of these two states have the option of purchasing policies from Farmers Insurance, which owns 21st Century.

21st Century’s auto insurance coverage options are relatively limited in comparison to their better-known competitors. The company offers all the traditional coverage options that are typically required by state. Bodily injury liability coverage and property damage liability coverage come standard. Customers can also choose to add collision, comprehensive, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

All auto policies with 21st Century come with free roadside assistance. Unlike its competitors, however, 21st Century does not offer extra auto policy add-ons such as loan-lease coverage, extended warranty coverage, or accident forgiveness.

21st Century does not directly provide insurance policies for classic cars, motorcycles, boats, or off-road vehicles. For these, customers must turn to 21st Century’s partner company, Foremost Insurance.

Methodology

In order to determine 21st Century car insurance’s ranking in the auto insurance industry, WalletHub’s editors evaluated the policies offered by the largest, most popular U.S. car insurance companies. We assessed the relative strengths and weaknesses of each company and based our rating on several key factors that important to car insurance shoppers.

  • Customer reviews
  • Watchdog ratings
  • Coverage options
  • Coverage limits
  • Claims process
  • Customer service
  • Cost
  • Transparency

To get a better sense of customer satisfaction at 21st Century and other companies, WalletHub calculates a complaints score for each insurer. This score is the ratio of each insurer’s share of all U.S. car insurance complaints over its share of annual premiums for private passenger auto policies. In other words, the complaints score represents the number of complaints adjusted to the size of the auto insurer. The adjustment is necessary, as larger companies tend to receive more complaints.

For our sample quotes, WalletHub used car insurance data from the state of California, which was chosen because it’s the most populous state in the U.S., and it lands in the middle of WalletHub’s price rankings for car insurance. We looked at data for the major auto insurance companies in at least 30 cities in the state. WalletHub obtained quotes from the state insurance regulator’s database for drivers of different ages with varying driving records. A poor record assumes at least one at-fault accident or traffic violation.
